Athens State University’s Annual Flag Day Ceremony and Cookout was held on Friday, June 14. A patriotic crowd gathered at the Sandridge Student Center Ballroom for the event. Dr. Lionel Wright, Assistant Professor for Business at Athens State University, was the guest speaker. Wright enlisted in the Army in 1992 where he became a 92A Automated Logistics Specialist. Wright is a highly decorated military veteran having earned numerous awards including the Bronze Star Metal, Meritorious Service Medal with one Oak Leaf Cluster, and the Army Commendation Medal with five Oak Leaf Clusters, among others.
The Athens State Community Band treated guests to music before and during the ceremony. The Copeland Road Quartet sang the “Star Spangled Banner” after Boy Scout Troop #240 proudly posted the colors. The Athens State University Alumni Association hosted the event.
