Athens State University art major Derek McElroy created the winning design for a newly formed nonprofit board sponsored by Family Security Credit Union and the community. The design contest was made possible by Angelica Figueroa, VP of Better Together of Alabama (BTA). Students competed to create a brand for the nonprofit organization. McElroy, a senior, completed his winning entry along the 18 others students of the Alabama Center for the Arts in Decatur, Alabama.
Michael McWhorter, a 2016 graduate, won the top prize from the Tennessee Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry for designing their new logo.
All students in Keller’s course were also required to submit a poster for the 2016 Ability Counts Poster Competition held each year by the Alabama Department of Rehabilitation Services. For the third year in a row, Athens State art students swept in all three top award places. Emerald Hammon won 3rd place overall, Richard Roberts won 2nd place and Michael McWhorter took 1st place in the competition.
Students in the course were also required to submit a poster for the 2016 “Art of Ice Cream” poster competition. Alyssa Mitchell submitted the winning design which was printed as a poster and a t-shirt and sold at the Annual Ice Cream Festival. Mitchell attended the premiere of the event to sign the posters. The festival producers were so impressed with all the entries that they framed and displayed them all during the festival.
