Athens State Student Receives Award from Community Action Partnership

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Amy Frazier, an Athens State student in Education, received the Community Action Partnership of North Alabama Teacher of the Year 2013-2014. Frazier was awarded the distinction by Kim Dodd of the Decatur-based organization that is committed to reducing or eliminating the causes and consequences of poverty.

Community Action Partnership serves 15 counties in North Alabama with Head Start, Early Head Start, and Pre-K classrooms. Frazier is a Head Start teacher at Scottsboro Head Start in Scottsboro, Alabama in Jackson County. She was nominated by her peers for the award.

Frazier’s goal to become a teacher has been untraditional but rewarding. She began a path in the summer of 2000 to earn an Early Childhood Education Bachelor’s Degree but put her education on hold to start a family. In 2005 Frazier went to work as a Head Start teacher and in 2011, as an employee of Community Action Partnership of North Alabama, she took advantage of the organization’s tuition assistance to help employees continue their education.

“In the Fall of 2011, I enrolled in one class at Athens State, in fact it was the same class I had taken in 2000,” remarked Frazier. “I continued to slowly take 1 to 2 classes until eventually I took three classes, and then four last summer.”

Frazier will finally graduate in May 2015 with her Early Childhood Education Degree – successfully completing the educational pathway she started 15 years prior.

“I remember back in 2000, I met a wonderful mentor and professor by the name of Dr. Pat Kuby,” Frazier continues. “She was my advisor then, and she still is today. She has been a great mentor and friend to me.”

This past summer, Frazier was asked to be the Honor Marshall for the College of Education at the Commencement Ceremony. Her professors in the education department recommended her for this role.
