The Athenian Players are the resident theatre company representing the Drama & Theatre Arts program at Athens State University. Athens State University offers coursework at the junior and senior level, as a baccalaureate degree-granting institution of the State of Alabama.
The Drama & Theatre Arts Program at Athens State offers both a Bachelor of Arts in Drama & Theatre Arts and a Drama Minor. Students earning a BA in Drama & Theatre Arts learn various fundamental performance and production techniques, develop dramaturgical skills by learning to critically analyze dramatic literature through historical and aesthetic movements in a variety of arts, and gain knowledge of theatre history, dramatic literature, dramatic theory, as well as current trends in the arts. The Drama Minor is open to all Athens State University students regardless of their major concentration.
The Athenian Players produce three plays a year drawing the cast and crew from the diverse and talented Athens State University Students, Community College students, and the local Alabama community of theatre artists at large. Our theatre is the recently constructed Studio Theatre in the Music & Theatre Building as part of Phase II of the Alabama Center for the Arts located in historic Downtown Decatur.
Our goal is to continue the long tradition of quality dramatic productions from Athens State University’s illustrious history and to be a beacon for future theatre artists in the greater North Alabama region.
