“Active Minds” Announces Upcoming Events[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]April 9, 2018
The Athens State chapter of Active Minds will be offering several events to students, faculty, and staff this month:
- Suicide Prevention Training will be offered to all faculty, staff, and students on Tuesday, April 17. The training, to be held in Classroom Building room 101 from 11 am – 1 pm, will be provided free of charge by Crisis Services of North Alabama.
Training participants will learn how suicide can be prevented by three steps: Question, Persuade, and Refer (QPR). The mission of QPR is to reduce suicidal behaviors and save lives by providing innovative, practical and proven suicide prevention training. Education empowers all people, regardless of their background, to make a positive difference in the life of someone they know.
- Active Minds will be hosting a Hope Kit and Mindfulness Jar event on Tuesday, April 10 from 11 am – 1 pm in the Classroom Building Lobby. At the event, participants will be making Hope Kits, boxes filled with reminders of things that give them hope, and Mindfulness Jars that help provide a sense of calmness and relaxation.
- Active Minds also hopes to spread some encouragement and cheer to elderly members of the community this spring. They are inviting students and faculty to write a quick, encouraging note that will be delivered to elderly patients in the hospital, particularly those with little or no family. Note cards will be provided at the Hope Kit and Mindfulness Jar Event for those who wish to participate, but those who cannot make it to the event are welcome to either drop off their notes to Dr. Miller or email Laine Martin, Outreach Coordinator for Active Minds, at firstname.lastname@example.org to arrange to have their note picked up. Submission for notes is April 30.
